What is the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program?
The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is a respected standard of dog behavior training that teaches dogs to be polite, reliable, and trustworthy in everyday life. According to the American Kennel Club, the CGC course covers 10 foundational skills that enhance your dog’s manners and your partnership.
These skills include interacting with strangers, walking calmly in public, handling, focus amidst distractions, and being comfortable when briefly separated from their handler.
CGC is a foundation for further training and everyday manners. Therapy-dog programs have their own screening, testing, and eligibility requirements.

Passing all 10 skills in one session qualifies you to apply for the official AKC CGC certificate (title) if your dog is eligible.

Between sessions, you’ll receive guided “homework” exercises to deepen skills through repetition in everyday settings. Feedback and adjustments happen regularly.

Mock Evaluation
Before your official test, we’ll run through the full 10-skill session under timed, simulated conditions. This boosts confidence and identifies areas needing fine-tuning.

Official CGC Evaluation
When your dog is ready, we help you arrange an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator and prepare for the test. Passing lets you apply for the CGC certificate; an official title also requires AKC registration or enrollment.

Loose-Leash Walking: Providing instruction on walking without pulling and demonstrating leash manners in various scenarios.
Sit, Down, and Stay Commands: Training dogs to follow basic commands and hold positions for a duration.
Coming When Called: Building reliable recall skills to ensure dogs respond promptly to their owners.
Reaction to Another Dog: Encouraging appropriate behavior when encountering other dogs during walks or in public spaces.
Reaction to Distractions: Exposing dogs to various distractions and teaching them to remain focused and well-behaved.
Duration
The Full CGC Classes span several weeks, allowing for an in-depth exploration of each test component. This extended duration ensures thorough understanding and proficiency in all aspects of the CGC test.
Weekend Workshops
Our weekend workshops focus on practice for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a separate program requiring a course of at least six weeks with an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator and successful completion of its 20-item evaluation. A one- or two-day CGC workshop does not meet those requirements.
